Have you ever stopped to consider why so many people today are interested in the potential benefits of solar energy and, of course, of other renewable sources of energy as well.

But solar energy of course is the most promising of all renewable energy sources for the simple reason that the sun is a far more reliable source of power than wind or water. For one thing the sun shines all the time whereas the wind may or may not blow on a particular given day. As for water based sources of power, they are indeed a wonderful source of energy, but only if you live in the vicinity of a sufficiently powerful source of running water.

But the real reason that people are so interested in renewable sources of power and more especially in solar power is that it can be of great benefit to the environment and can save you money in the long run as well. Of course the initial cost of any investment in alternative energy can be forbiddingly high, and that’s the reason why many people hesitate to take the plunge.

Governments are doing very little to help, though they offer some solar hot water rebate, and the best things that you can possibly do if you would like to avail of the benefits of alternative energy is to take matters with your own hands.

Alternative energy is only not within the financial capacity of many people because they choose dependence upon various manufacturing companies over dependence over their own resources. This must inevitably lead to disaster.

Did you know that if you want to put together your own solar water heater either from a kit or an installation that you designed yourself, the ultimate cost will be far less than if you were to purchase them in a conventional manner?

Similarly, if you were to buy individual photovoltaic cells, take the time to understand how a photovoltaic panel works and how those cells fit together inside that panel. And than work to create a panel of your own – in other words, if you are willing to use your own intelligence and labor instead of simply paying someone to create them for you, you will find that the cost would work out much cheaper than anyone would normally expect.

Unfortunately, the truth is that solar panels and solar water heaters cost much more than they should, but there are even more ways to reduce this cost. Did you know that the government offers a solar hot water rebate of up to thirty percent of the cost of your installation?

If you build your own system and avail of this solar hot water rebate as well, you should find that the construction cost turn out to be quite negligible. Add to that the inevitable energy savings of these devices. The fact that the massive reduction in electric bills that they represent means that you will soon recover the cost of them.

You’ll have a strong incentive to set up a solar heating installation of your own, taking advantage of the solar hot water rebate.
