Solar energy gains considerable importance as non renewable energy sources such as fossil fuels are increasingly depleted, and as such is the energy source of the future. Of course there are other alternative fuel sources being developed – hydrogen, for example, obtained from water, and forming water when it burns, would be a splendid source of energy if we could find away to get around the fact that it has this tendency to form explosive mixtures with air. Wind and water are powerful but (in the case of wind) unreliable, and (in the case of water) location-based. But the sun, that great nuclear furnace in the sky, the sun is always there for a great many hours a day, shining down relentlessly and providing free energy if only we could harness it.
.
The technology behind solar energy panels, that is to say, the photovoltaic reaction, was observed more than a century ago, but it has only truly been refined sufficiently enough to be useful in the recent past. This technology remains the best source of alternative energy today, and at present the only dependable and viable alternative source of energy. Solar power panels cabins in the wild, heat water, power traffic lights, and are used for a host of other purposes, including to power hybrid cars. A day might come when the deserts of the world, properly harnessed by advanced solar energy panels, might become a vast source of solar energy.
.
Today, homes all across the United States are powered at least in part by solar energy panels. The solar panel prices and installation can vary depending upon your power needs, and just how sophisticated the panels you install are.
.
Or you could construct your own solar power panels – while this does require some basic skills, there are lots of guides available on the net that can take you through the process of creating your own solar panel step by step, and in the process can save you thousands of dollars. Actually, learning to create your own solar panels could be the first step to creating a solar energy plant, where you have surplus energy that you could even sell to neighbors. There are lots of sources where you can easily buy the photovoltaic cells that are the basis for any solar panel.
.
Another good source of cheap solar energy panels if you’re handy with a tool kit is the rejected or damaged panels that solar panel manufacturing companies sometimes sell cheaply. Of course you’ll have to repair them, but it’s not that difficult, and if you have some experience with soldering you could probably do it fairly easily.
.
A third option is to buy older panels rather than the latest models – you can sometimes save a lot of money this way, though the older panels will occupy more space than the more efficient panels of today.
.
But whichever way you look at it, solar panels are an excellent investment, with a low maintenance life span of nearly twenty five years, a quarter of a century during which they will provide you power and reduce your expenditure on electricity bills.
